Yarn Weights

There are a 6 basic weights of yarn.

1. Super fine - this means yarns that are called baby, fingering, or sock. They generally use a needle size of 1-3 and will yeild 27-32 stitches per 4 inches.

2. Fine - this means yarns that are called sport of dk and they generally use a needle size of 3-5 and will yeild 23-26 stitches per 4 inches.

3. Light - this means yarns that are called light or worsted They generally use a needle size of 5-7 and will yeild 21-24 stitches per 4 inches.

4. Medium - this means yarns that are called afghan, Aran or worsted. They generally use a needle size of 7-9 and will yeild 16-20 stitches per 4 inches.

5. Bulky - this means yarns that are called chunky, craft, or rug. They generally use a needle size of 9-11 and will yeild 12-15 stitches per 4 inches.

6. Super Bulky - this means yarns that are called bulky or roving. They generally use a needle siz of 11 and up and will yeild 6-11 stitches per 4 inches.

There are standards of yarn that show you that selecting a certain weight yarn will give you a specific result. If you follow the rules of thumb when selecting a yarn for a project you should get the desired outcome.
